Sushi in Mid-town

I have discovered two places for a satisfying sushi meal in Mid-town … both are very close to Bryant Park, the oasis in mid-town … one can pick-up a delicious and fresh array of prepared food and walk to Bryant Park for a lovely picnic …
Frequently, I have to go to 42nd Street & 5th Avenue to do my art-appraisal research at the Main Research Library. Crossing 41st Street between Madison and 5th Avenues, I discovered a small “Japan-town” with a book-store, a grocery-fast food shop and Cafe Zaiya and Sushi Chiyoda. They are frequented by Japanese office workers and lovers of things Japanese.
Cafe Zaiya is a department store concept with a combination of fresh sashimi & sushi, tempura vegetables and shrimps, tonkatsu, teriyaki beef, cream puffs, cakes, pastries, all ready to go or eat in. 18 East 41st Street, 212-779-0600 [TWIR (NYC Nosh) | CitySearch | Yelp | NY Mag]
Sushi Chiyoda is strictly sashimi & sushi with a sushi counter in the back-room and liquor. web site, 16 East 41st Street, between 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue, 212-400-8880 [sushi NYC | MenuPages | Yelp | Salli Vates]

Notes from a visitor to NYC – Mishima, New York Noodle Town, Grand Sichuan

Peter received this email from Angela’s oldest sister, Maria, who owns a restaurant (Tin-Jo) in San José, Costa Rica, and who recently visited New York …

I had the best meals yet during this trip. Mishima was delicately sumptuous. Noodle Town´s steamed flounder was out of this world and I simply loved the Dan Dan Mien of Grand Szechuan. Good thing I left afer 10 days or else I would gain at least 20 pounds.

New York Noodle Town, 28 Bowery, at Bayard Street, 212-349-0923 [MenuPages | Citysearch]
The Grand Sichuan … is still very good, which means very hot and spicy food … a big plus, the restaurant has two big windows looking onto the Manhattan Bridge and Wall Street … what a view, especially on a cold winter day with the sun streaming into the space … try the hot/spicey tripe and tongue and an order of cool cucumbers … 125 Canal Street, at Chrystie Street, 212-625-9212 [MenuPages | Citysearch]

Shimizu

With credit to Frank Bruni … I have been to Shimizu, a sushi and shochu bar … dinner (with Angela) and lunch (with Roger – see pic below) …

lunch at Shimizu with my friend Roger

… very fresh fish and excellent Japanese aesthetics … I highly recommend this sushi and shochu bar around the Broadway theatre district … I killed two birds with one stone … Roger called for lunch in Chinatown and I countered with Shimizu because I had the desire to try the $9 lunch specials there and check on my missing house keys … 318 West 51st Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues, 212-581-1581 [sushi NYC | MenuPages | Citysearch]

The idea to go to Shimizu for lunch occurred to Mr. Lo at an inspirational moment, so he called me and off we went. After we met at the entrance he admitted that the real reason was that he thought he had lost his keys at dinner. Still says a lot for the place that he would be willing to eat two meals in a row there.
I found the sushi to be extremely fresh and tasty and the atmosphere open and pleasant. Service was great and the green tea was excellent Japanese green tea – not green dishwater. A bit pricey but not if you select the lunch menu items and avoid sushi a la cart.
